The music teacher rolled out an upright piano and asked the class if anyone knew how to play. Alex raised his hand without hesitation and without any previous experience of playing the piano. Confident, he went and made something up for the whole class to hear. It was less than impressive. However, from that day on he pursued his love of music through private lessons. Now, he is a graduate of the Royal Conservatory and veteran of many competitions such as Kiwanis, EFCL, and K-days talent explosion. Although he has been a performer for most of his young career teaching music and sharing knowledge is his true passion in life.
Amanda Downing was born with a love for music and started out on the organ when she was 7 years old. Although she was very successful in competitions and festivals with the organ she eventually left it to follow her passion for the piano. Amanda moved from Saskatoon to Edmonton to take the piano program at Grant MacEwan University, and graduated on the Deanʼs List with a major in composition. She loves to write music and after she graduated she wrote the soundtrack for a short animated film that was featured at the Ottawa International Film Festival. She is also a singer/songwriter and writes on both the piano and guitar. Her passion for music is infectious and she aims to inspire her students through her love of music. Her gentle teaching style and focus on skill development and discipline cultivates a bond with her students and a trust in her approach.
